Vertical Packaging Machines

Vertical Packaging Machines

Vertical form-fill-seal machines (VFFS) are automated packaging systems that form, fill, and seal products vertically. They are widely used in the packaging of food, powders, granules, and small-piece products.

Basic Working Principle

The machine actually performs three main operations in sequence: forming, filling, and sealing.

Film Feeding and Forming
Packaging film in roll form is fed into the machine.
The film passes through a mold called a "forming collar" and is formed into a tube (pipe) shape.
Vertical Sealing (Back Seam)
The tube-shaped film is sealed vertically at the edges by heating. This creates the back seam of the package.
Bottom Sealing
First, the bottom of the tube is sealed with horizontal jaws.
This forms the base of the package.
Product Filling
The product (e.g., legumes, sugar, coffee, chips, etc.) is dropped into the tube from the top.
The dosing system (scale, volumetric dosing system, etc.) adjusts the correct amount.
Closing and Cutting
The top of the filled package is closed.
The bottom of the next package is formed simultaneously.
Packages are separated by cutting.
Which products is it used for?
Powdered products: flour, coffee, milk powder
Granulated products: rice, pasta, sugar
Piece products: nuts, chips
Liquid (with special systems): sauce, oil
Advantages
High speed and automation
Less labor required
Standard and uniform packaging
Easy adaptation to different package sizes
Additional features
In some machines:

Gas filling (e.g. nitrogen injection for shelf life)
Date printing
Zip lock or special cutting shapes
Multi-head weighing systems
